Living in Southport, Indiana, you get the best of both worlds: a cozy, tight-knit community with the bustling energy of Indianapolis just a stone’s throw away. But as any Hoosier knows, when those freezing Midwestern winter mornings hit, your hot shower is your sanctuary. Unfortunately for our customer, Kat, her shower felt less like a sanctuary and more like a slippery telephone booth.
Here is how Superior Bath System stepped in to rescue her morning routine.
The Challenge: A Cramped and Clunky Start to the Day
Take a peek at Kat’s Before photo, and you’ll immediately see the problem.
- The Problem: Kat’s existing shower stall was suffering from a severe case of claustrophobia. The heavy, framed glass swinging door boxed the bather in, making a standard-sized alcove feel incredibly tight.
- The Setup: With only a single, vertical grab bar and an aging, slightly yellowed surround, the space wasn’t optimizing for either safety or aesthetics. The high threshold and restrictive door also made stepping in and out a daily balancing act.
The Solution: Bright, Open, and Accessible
Kat needed a bathroom that worked for her, not against her. We tossed out the restrictive glass door and brought in a breath of fresh air.
- The Materials & Upgrades: We installed a custom-fitted, brilliant white, non-porous acrylic shower system. Because this material is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, Kat won’t have to spend her weekends scrubbing grout.
- The Hardware: We upgraded the plumbing fixtures to a premium dual showerhead system (featuring a versatile handheld wand) and integrated a sleek curtain rod instead of a glass door to instantly double the elbow room. We also added built-in, corner shelving to keep bath products off the floor.

The Biggest Challenge: Maximizing a Fixed Footprint
The toughest part of this project wasn’t ripping out the old unit; it was making the exact same square footage feel twice as big. Without moving plumbing or tearing down drywall to expand the footprint, our installation team had to be strategic. By eliminating the framed glass enclosure and utilizing a seamless, bright white acrylic wall surround, we tricked the eye into seeing a much larger, deeper space. Additionally, ensuring the solid, waterproof anchoring of multiple heavy-duty grab bars without compromising the sleek, modern aesthetic required precision engineering behind the walls.
The Outcome & Most Obvious Gains: Safety Meets Style
Look at the After photo! The transformation is night and day.
- Massive Accessibility Gains: By replacing the swinging door with a curtain rod and lowering the threshold of the shower pan, stepping in and out is now a breeze.
- ADA-Friendly Safety: We installed three strategically placed, heavy-duty grab bars. Whether Kat is entering, standing, or adjusting the water, there is a secure handhold within reach. If you want to learn more about making your space safer, explore our Accessibility Options.
- Visual Expansion: The bright white walls reflect light beautifully, turning a previously dark corner into a vibrant, welcoming space.
Indiana weather might be unpredictable, but thanks to Superior Bath System, Kat’s morning shower is now a guaranteed forecast of safety, comfort, and style.
